How to Avoid a DUI in Tennessee
The winter holiday season which spans between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day is traditionally a time when there are a high number of DUI arrests. It is a time of the year when everyone gathers to celebrate with lots of food and wine and alcohol. Law enforcement is aware of this fact, so it is also a time when they step up enforcement on the roadways at night when the bars close and when the parties end. The end of 2015 into 2016 will be especially busy, as New Year’s Eve falls on a Thursday. That means the police will likely be extending their efforts past January 1st.
Make 2016 your safest year ever
When a person has had too much to drink, their judgement is impaired, so they may have full confidence in their ability to drive, when really they are just going to put themselves and the other drivers in danger when they get behind the wheel. There are increased sobriety checkpoints in order to stop drunk drivers before they get the chance to cause a deadly accident.
Here are a few common sense tips to follow that will help you avoid getting a DUI this year:
- If you drink, then don’t drive.
- Arrange for a designated driver, or a taxi ride home if you are planning to drink with your friends.
- Make sure to have food in your stomach when you consume alcohol.
- Don’t overestimate your ability to drive safely when you have been drinking.
None of these tips have information that you did not already know, but it can be helpful to be reminded every once in a while. Some individuals keep drinking and driving and putting their lives and the lives of others in danger.
According to the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, there were 6,648 fatalities in alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes in Tennessee in 2014. Each of those deaths were preventable if the driver of the vehicle that caused the crash would take responsibility for their actions and get a safe ride home rather than get behind the wheel after drinking too much.
