Tips for Avoiding a DUI at Bonnaroo
Before long the 2016 Bonnaroo season will be in full swing here in Tennessee. From June 9th through the 12th, Manchester, TN will bloom into a small city with thousands of visitors who will be our guests for the four day music festival-palooza. We are going to be honest and let you know that you will definitely see and feel law enforcement’s presence all the way from Interstate 24 and the other major highways such as I-40 or I-75 as you approach the area. They will be out in force protecting the highways and local roads from those who decide to start celebrating too early.
You do not want you Bonnaroo adventure to be sidelined before you even arrive at the festival grounds by getting charged with a DUI on your way in. While we know that most Bonnaroovians just want to come and hang out and have a good time, there are always a few people in the bunch who are looking to get away with whatever they think that they can get away with. Just know that this is high season for law enforcement. The festival has been around for long enough that they know the drill and they know exactly what to look for.
Tennessee has very strict DUI laws, so it pays to be aware of the law and the consequences if you should be charged with a DUI in Tennessee. For the first offense, if convicted, you can get anywhere from 48 hours up to 11 months in jail, pay fines and penalties of $350 to $1500, get your license suspended for a year and be required to pay for and install an Ignition Interlock Device (IID). Judges in Tennessee have a lookback period of ten years when considering DUI sentencing. If you should refuse to take a chemical test in Tennessee, under the implied consent law, you could be facing a one year license suspension, and if it is a 2nd or 3rd offense your license can be revoked for two years.
Tennessee law enforcement also likes to conduct sobriety checkpoints, which are set up like roadblocks that allow officers to briefly detain drivers that are passing through. After a brief interview, if an officer suspects that the driver may have been drinking, they can request a field sobriety test. These sobriety checkpoints must be publicized ahead of time and they can be found on the Tennessee Highway Patrol’s website. Law enforcement officers are also on the lookout for seat belt compliance and driver’s licenses, so make sure that your registration is up-to-date and your driver’s license has not expired.
