What Are the Safest Towns in Tennessee?
If you are considering moving to Tennessee, or want to move to a new town within the state, now is the right time to begin your research. The SafeWise Sixth Annual Safest Cities report was released late in 2020, highlighting the top 20 safest cities and towns in Tennessee.
And Franklin and Brentwood made the list! (Columbia made the extended list of 121 cities and towns at number 75.)
To create the list of safe cities and towns in each state, SafeWise uses data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Census Bureau. SafeWise takes the crime data from the FBI, which does not include arson, and then calculates the rate of crime per 1,000 residents in each city or town. SafeWise weighs violent crime and property crime equally. Because of this, a town with no violent crime could wind up low on the list if it has a high number of property crimes.
An overview of Tennessee crime statistics
According to the data calculations made by SafeWise, the violent crime rate for 1,000 people in Tennessee is 6.2 incidents. This is a slight decrease from the 6.6 incidents per 1,000 people in the state in 2019. It is also much higher than the national rate of 3.7 incidents per 1,000 people. People who reported personal experience with violent crime increased from 14 percent in 2019 to 17 percent in 2020.
The property crime rate in Tennessee is 28.3 incidents per 1,000 people in 2020. This is a slight decrease from 29.5 incidents per 1,000 people in 2019. The 28.3 incidents per 1,000 people is above the national rate of 22.0 incidents per 1,000 people. The state also reported an increase in personal experience with property crime from 2019 to 2020, jumping from 16 percent to 29 percent.
Burglary accounted for 10 percent of all reported property crime in the safest cities that made the list. It accounted for 17 percent of all reported property crimes for the entire state of Tennessee. The most common property crime in Tennessee is larceny-theft, coming in at 72 percent of all property crimes statewide and 84 percent of all property crimes reported in the safest cities that made the list.
